I was pretty stunned when I first saw Starship Troopers: Extermination. Not because it was bad, but because I was stunned I hadn't seen anything like this yet. The 16-player co-op first-person shooter is a ton of fun, and even though it is rated as Unsupported on the Steam Deck, that hasn't stopped developer Offworld from getting it ready for the Deck, which we are seeing in the new 1.3 patch that was released yesterday.

Starship Troopers: Extermination

The new update adds some Steam Deck-specific video settings from Offworld to optimize for performance or visual quality. You can swap between the two presets whenever you want to, though the team mentions that switching during a match could cause the game to crash. It's in alpha right now, so there will be improvements in future updates. There have also been some solid performance improvements in general with bug rendering, proper culling for nuclear explosions, and hive hunt eggs being optimized.

However, the rest of the update is big itself. Most weapons now have staged weapon reloads, so if your reload gets interrupted, it will continue at a later stage instead of needing to play the animation from the beginning. Some planets now have day and night cycles with dynamic weather, there are new extremely weather mutators, there are two new mods for the Sp.L.I.T. Shotgun, and there are tons of bugs that were fixed across the game.

You can check out the full changelog for the update via their Steam Community Post.
