I am a sucker for some good JRPGs to play on the Steam Deck, and Star Ocean The Second Story R is a great one. It performs extremely well on the Deck and looks amazing, considering how gorgeous it looks. Square Enix does a great job creating these beautiful 2.5D games, like Octopath Traveler 2 and gets them running incredibly well on portable devices, which I love. Now, a new update has been released, and it looks like I have a reason to come back.

If you are a masochist, this is going to be an update you will love. There's a new "Chaos" difficulty mode meant to give you an extremely hard challenge, and you can now raid battle the "Ten Wise Men" after you beat the game, who all possess unique special attacks that will give you even more of a challenge. On top of those, we do have more items/equipment, new NPC illustrations, new collections, and an ending playback feature.

All of these culminate to make an awesome new update that makes me want to go back and play it again. Star Ocean The Second Story R is wonderful to play on the Steam Deck, so now I absolutely feel like I have to take a second dive to check out the new artwork and die a million times when trying to fight the new bosses. You can check out our review of the game on Steam Deck to see exactly what you can expect performance-wise.

Star Ocean The Second Story R can be purchased on Steam for $50, but it is available on Humble for 20% off at $39.99, which could be lowered even further if you have a Humble Choice subscription.
