Of all the games that can be played on the Steam Deck, there are a few that really shine on the mobile device. One of those great genres to play there are boomer shooters, and luckily, there are a chunk of games that in this genre that run amazingly on the Deck. And so far, it appears we have found another one.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is a remaster of the classic boomer shooter released in 1995. With Nightdive Studios at the helm working with New Blood and Apogee, this remaster brings the game to the modern era with improvements and additions like 4K and Ultrawide resolution support, no framerate caps, restored lost beta content, a level editor and Steam Workshop integration, online and LAN multiplayer, and a brand new episode created by the 3 studios. This edition also contains all original episodes and expansion packs!

The game will be released on July 31st, and you can wishlist it now, but there will be a demo that is available starting on June 19th, when the Steam Next Fest begins. I was lucky enough to get early access to the demo and try it out on the Steam Deck and man....it is fantastic. Not only does it have the same feeling as its predecessors, but it feels elevated thanks to the lack of FPS cap and updated visuals.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition Demo - Steam Deck Performance

We were told there has been no internal testing on the Steam Deck yet, so performance is subject to change.

The demo of Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition features one level from each of the episodes in games, so you will be able to get a nice taste of what each one has to offer. On top of that, you will be able to select one of the 5 characters and choose a difficulty. After that, you are in the game and it plays just like the classic retro boomer-shooters and I personally love it.

When it comes to the performance on the Steam Deck, it runs really well! The game didn't give me the impression that it would be tough to run, but regardless, it runs really well! There are some spots where the game stutters a little bit, but they are far and few as the game runs incredibly well a majority of the time. The game keeps a stable 60 FPS at around 6W - 8.5W drain, so you can expect around 5 hours of battery!

The demo also sports mixed/simultaneous controller support, meaning you can set gyro to act as a mouse and you will have a fantastic experience with using gyroscope controls to pinpoint aim at enemies. The game also supports the 16:10 resolution, so there are no black bars around the screen!

Without internal testing on the Steam Deck, Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition runs really well and I am sure the team over there will be nailing down any issues up to release next month. I am personally excited to see what the final game will be like and I will definitely be diving into that multiplayer on release!

You can wishlist the game over on Steam and get all ready for its demo on June 19th.
