A copy of Reality Break was provided to us by the publisher. Thank you!

I love playing roguelikes on the Steam Deck, but Reality Break may be my favorite so far. It's a really unique experience that takes a nice spin on the roguelike gameplay loop with some ARPG mechanics that ultimately result in one of the more enjoyable times in a very crowded genre. And after playing it for a bit, this may be one of the more essential titles to put in your portable library.

Reality Break on Steam Deck

A lot of this comes from how it handles its loot and progression. You control a spaceship on a 2D plane, flying around space, triggering events, and shooting down enemy ships. All of these tend to drop gear, which you can drop and place at will to continually upgrade yourself. The constant randomized gear and slowly upgrading more and more incrementally is a big aspect of ARPGs like Diablo and Path of Exile, and it fits perfectly here.

We also have ways to upgrade some parts you pick up with Fate Pulses. This is essentially a specific currency you can pick up to upgrade parts you get marked with a lightning icon. It's a great way to enhance your gear while also finding new items to make yourself progressively better and better. It doesn't take long to get this currency, so there's no love lost when you have to ultimately replace the part with something better.

The combat is so addicting, and with multiple abilities to unlock through leveling up, ways to "fracture the timeline" and start over again with more power, multiple characters to try out, analyzing gear to find hidden attributes, different missions that can be upgraded to give better gear and experience, and a story to follow with missions, Reality Break feels like one of the best games I have played in a long time. I love the whole "rewrite the universe" idea here, and it helps give the game a cool sci-fi core.

It also fits perfectly on the Steam Deck. The visuals alone are so vibrant and colorful, and they really pop on the Steam Deck OLED's screen. It plays extremely well with a gamepad and runs pretty well even with most of its settings turned on, such as Ambient Occlusion and Antialiasing. It caps the framerate to around 35 FPS when playing, and I couldn't find a way to bypass that in the settings, no matter what I turned on or off, but it still feels nice. This was most likely done to cap battery drain and keep things fluid, but I do wish I had the choice.

RealityBreak 5

There are going to be some drops for the heavier scenes, like surviving constant waves of enemies, but this doesn't happen often and should still be enjoyable regardless.

The game is now available on Steam and on sale for $22.49, but we were graciously given 10 copies of the game to give away! So, we are giving away 5 copies on Bluesky and the other 5 on Twitter/X. If you follow us there, head over to our profiles and look at the pinned post for details on how to enter.

Still, I highly recommend checking the game out and purchasing it, even if you don't want to enter our giveaway. I actually took longer than I should have writing this article because I kept playing and not paying attention to writing, it's really addicting. If you enjoy good video games, don't skip out on Reality Break.
