I absolutely adore games that showcase a reality that is distorted from the current one we live in. It's probably why I enjoy Cyberpunk settings so much, and I also love tech. But I am a history enjoyer, so combine the two and you have a game I get way too excited about. So, when I was introduced to Milky Tea Studios and I got to see their newest game, Grit and Valor - 1949, I was into it as soon as I saw the premise.

The game takes place in 1949, when World War 2 hasn't ended yet due to the Axis forces making and using Mechs. The game is set in a gorgeous dieselpunk-esque world and defend your bases against the onslaught of mechs from the evil powers. It's an awesome concept and it looks absolutely beautiful, and it seems like it will have some great gameplay to make it one to watch.

Milky Tea Studios decided to use a real-time strategy system for its core loop, which isn't something we see a lot of for these kinds of games. Usually, when I see a top down grid like this, I think turn-based like Into the Breach or Fire Emblem, but no, not here. You will have to make decisions on the fly, moving your mechs around, prioritizing who goes where, and doing all of this so you can hopefully come out on top. There's some roguelike elements in here, too, which is a big plus for me.

I also don't see many games like this with controller support either, especially in real-time, yet here we are, and that will make it more playable on the Steam Deck.

Then, we have a solid gameplay loop to keep Grit and Valor - 1949 replayable. This includes upgrading your pilot and customizing your mechs to configure your squad, getting currency and new parts as you play, preparing for the mission before getting into it, and more. I love me some solid reasons to come back and play games over and over again, and it feels like this will be one that gives me a few.

On the announcement, Kevin Campbell, the producer at Milky Tea, discusses the game a bit:

We’re delighted to announce our first game with Megabit today. We can’t wait for players to discover more of our vision for crafting a truly original roguelite experience, which combines popular mechanics from tower defense and strategy games, while spinning it into something fresh and exciting.

Grit and Valor - 1949 is due to release in 2025, but it can be wishlisted right now on Steam. If you are a fan of strategy games in alternate histories, this should be one you closely watch.
