The Game Awards this year was probably one of the best I have seen in a long time with some amazing games winning well-deserved awards and tons of announcements. We covered all of the announcements for PC from the Pre-Show and main show, and it looks like next year has an incredible lineup of games. However, the first one we will be seeing will be Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the next entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. It has taken some time, but it will arrive on January 23rd, and I couldn't be more excited. And we can confirm Steam Deck optimization is underway for the title, too!

I am overjoyed to see Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming to PC, and being able to play it on the Steam Deck would be an amazing experience, but I was a bit skeptical at first. When it was announced, Square Enix posted an article about the game coming to PC, which listed the system requirements for the game, and they are very hefty. The minimum specs are asking for an RTX 2060 GPU for the minimum, playing at 1080p/30 FPS, and that's way too high for what the Deck can handle.

However, it seems Square is aware of this regardless! Further down in the article, they discuss the Steam Deck and mention they are in the process of optimizing the game for the Deck, and will have more information to share about Verification in the future:

Even with the high requirements, I am actually quite optimistic about playing this on the go. Square Enix has been fantastic with Deck support for their games, and even ones that don't run well are still borderline playable (Final Fantasy 16). With them going out of their way to specifically mention they are optimizing shows that they recognize how important it is to try hitting that mark for portable play. I, for one, can't wait to play this on the go!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can be pre-purchased on Steam now at 30% off for $48.99 ahead of its January 23rd release. Pre-purchasing can get you some summon materia and armor while having a save from the previous entry will get you some extra summoning materia. You may need to manually transfer the save from one prefix to another on the Steam Deck, like we had to with The Legend of Heroes: Trails From The Sky, but we will be testing that ourselves on release!
