Admittedly, I am not great at fighting games. I try, and I do genuinely enjoy them, but I am nowhere near good enough to actually beat other real people. Even still, there are some games that I’ll want to play regardless, and usually, that switch between Street Fighter and Tekken, but Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves may be the newest contender for my favorite fighting game to play. So much so that I had to play it for a second time at the Tokyo Game Show, and I still wanted more afterward!

It feels like a standard fighting game at first, but it can quickly evolve into a much more advanced field when you get the special moves and abilities involved. Like Street Fighter, you and your opponent are on a 2.5D field to fight with each other. Each of you has six different attacks: light, medium, and heavy punches and kicks. These can be combined with each other to form different combos to eliminate your foe as fast as possible.

Fatal Fury definitely feels like other fighting games at its core, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the abilities really help it stand out. You have different special moves you can do, similar to other fighting games, but we also have the REV system. This is a way to power up attacks, make special moves, and even cancel moves. There are also REV Arts, which are EX Special Moves, and the S.P.G. system from The King of Fighters 13 returns as well. We also have two ways to control the game: Arcade Mode (the classic way to play with more control over your character and their moves) and Smart Mode (a simplified control scheme that is much easier to create combos from).

Each character handles really well and very unique too. All 6 characters I got to play as had distinct styles that I got a feel for. I ended up actually preferring Preecha and her move set over any of the others, though I did pretty okay with Terry and Marco.

All of this is wrapped in gorgeous comic-book-style visuals that are appealing to look at. The world and levels are vibrant, the models look great, and the effects of your moves glow up with colorful exuberance on the screen.

At the Tokyo Game Show, I got to play it again, but this time, I went head-to-head with my wife. She wipes the floor with me, and of all 15 matches we played, I only won 1. But it was a blast, and I had such a good time. I can’t wait to see what other characters and the other levels feel like. On top of that, we also had Ken and Chun-Li from Street Fighter announced as guest DLC characters after the game releases, which is all the more exciting.

While I was at Gamescom, I asked about Steam Deck performance, and the outlook is optimistic! While there were no exact specifics on performance, I did get confirmation that the team is testing and looking to optimize the game on the Steam Deck. It was awesome to hear, and it made me more excited for the game than I was before! Either way, this is definitely a fighting game to watch out for if you’re a fan of the genre.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves can be pre-purchased ahead of its April 24th release date. But if you pre-order, you get early access to start playing it on April 21st.
