SteamOS is an amazing gaming operating system, and thanks to the Steam Deck, I use it the most. It's less cluttered and not filled with features and applications that I don't want, including the Copilot AI stuff. However, the OS is currently only available on the Steam Deck, and we can't get it anywhere else just yet. But this may change very soon as Steam's new brand guidelines are hinting at more devices getting support.
Initially spotted by Brad Lynch (@SadlyItsBradley) on Twitter, Valve has updated its third-party hardware branding and logos/guidelines. The document details new branding and logos for SteamVR, Steam, and SteamOS. Under the SteamOS logo and brand guidelines section of the document, Valve details that this logo is meant to indicate whether a hardware device will run SteamOS and boot into it. They also say that manufacturers will ship hardware with a Steam image in the form provided, and physical alterations shouldn't be made to the logo.
I see this move as planning ahead for Valve, which could be a sign that they are preparing for SteamOS to be used with other pieces of hardware like different handhelds or pre-built PCs made by other manufacturers. I am actually leaning more towards this being for pre-build Desktop PCs over other handhelds, but with mention of the ROG Ally multiple times in update changelogs, I could also see some deal with ASUS to ship some Ally with SteamOS or provide it as an option. Though this could also be marketed as a more affordable, mainstream handheld OS to compete with Windows, since it still isn't great for handhelds.
However, and I am going a bit into speculation here, I think this could be a hint more for Steam Machines making a return. Valve would absolutely ship their own devices with this, and for whatever reason, it looks like a logo to me that would ship on a console-like device. I want a new Steam Machine with SteamOS running on it more than anything else, so this is definitely a hope I have.
I look forward to seeing the first device to ship with this new logo, though I would be willing to bet it will most likely be seen on Steam Deck packaging first.
