If you enjoy moving around items to fit ever so perfectly in your inventory, like in Resident Evil 4, then this is the game for you! The inventory management roguelike game, Backpack Hero, released into Early Access on Steam today. Developed by Jaspel and published by IndieArk, Backpack Hero will have you doing...a TON of inventory management to battle your way through randomly generated levels.
Watch that backpack grow!
In this twist of the deck-building roguelike genre, you need to focus on not only what you carry, but how you carry it! Some items can affect others next to it in positive or negative ways, so you must fit everything in just the right spot! So far the game has over 300 items, mini games, random event rooms and stores, 3 unique characters, and over 40 enemies, which you must slay to level up and expand your backpack! This game is in early access, so there are plans not only to add more of everything, but also add an overworld where you can use resources to upgrade and organize your own town (which will give more content in the dungeons).
It can really....really grow.
The game itself runs like a charm on the Steam Deck. No settings changed, temps are around 55c with a 6W drain...for a massive 7 HOUR BATTERY LIFE at 60FPS! Currently, the game has no controller support, but here's hoping the developers will plan that in. The game is playable with the base controller scheme assigned, but it does take some getting used to. I joined their discord to discuss it with the developers, who confirmed controller support, as well as a Steam Deck controller profile, will be coming. You can, however, set a GPU Clock Speed Frequency to 1200 as there is some stuttering in-game.
Look at that battery life...beautiful, so beautiful.
Oh and I would like to make special mention that this game...HAS A NATIVE LINUX BUILD. No need for Proton, just run the game as is and it shall work very well. The game is a good chunk of fun so far and I can only see it getting better from here! The game is normally $17 on Steam, but is having a 10% off sale to celebrate their release so you can get it for $15.29 until August 22nd!
