Earlier today, Metaphor: ReFantazio got a new update containing some wonderful adjustments, minor fixes, and an issue that wouldn't bring up New Game+ when it should have. But that's not all! With this new update, we also have a new graphical option to change the anti-aliasing in-game, giving us a choice between SMAA, FXAA, or neither. And while it can make the game look pretty great, it doesn't help performance on the Steam Deck as much, even though it runs pretty decently on the Steam Deck already.

With the new update, which was detailed in a blog post on the ATLUS forums, we can choose between the three different anti-aliasing options and see which one looks best for us. I decided to go to a spot I knew was heavier hitting and try out each option to see which looks best and if there are any performance differences. Sadly, it doesn't seem to help all that much with performance, as each option stuck around 27 - 28 FPS, but it does make the game look fantastic. The version of the game I had to test had no anti-aliasing, so this is a great step up:

I also decided to check out a couple of other spots to see which one looks the best:

Personally, I am leaning towards FXAA being my favorite. No Anti-Aliasing looks too sharp, while SMAA doesn't look smooth enough. FXAA looks really smooth, and since there's almost no change in performance, I am quite happy with it and see no distinct drawbacks.

This doesn't change our review of Metaphor, but we did add FXAA as our recommended Anti-Aliasing option. Regardless, it is a fantastic game and definitely worth checking out and playing on the go.
