SteamOS Is Officially Expanding To Other Handhelds, Starting With The Legion Go S

There has been speculation about SteamOS coming to other handhelds recently, and it seems it is truly official now! Lenovo announced at CES 2025 that one of their new models, the Lenovo Legion Go S, will be shipping with SteamOS, the operating system that has been only seen on the Steam Deck. This is a huge development, and it is great to see this kind of expansion with such a wonderful OS.

This means that the Legion Go S will be able to take full advantage of SteamOS' awesome features like suspend/resume, a bloat-less desktop mode, an optimized console-like experience, and the many wonderful features of Steam Client like game recording, Steam Input, and more. It is a Linux-based OS, which means there may be some games that won't run on it natively, like the ones with kernel-level anti-cheat, but with how far Proton has come, there won't be many games that will be locked down.

On top of that, it sounds like Valve is gearing up to bring SteamOS to other handhelds too. In a blog post they posted, they confirmed that they are working hard to fully support the Legion Go S, but at the same time, the work they are doing "will improve compatibility with other handhelds." It sounds like they are going to be making some general changes to SteamOS to start making sure it is compatible with other devices as well. However, Lenovo is currently the only third-party Valve is working with regarding SteamOS.

The Legion Go S is going to be a bit more powerful than the Steam Deck as well, making it a solid competitor to the Deck. It will be using AMD's Z2 Go APU, which has similar CPU and GPU core counts to the Steam Deck's APU but targets higher TDP limits. It will have worse battery life but a bigger battery at 55Wh and 16GB RAM with 512GB SSD. It will cost $499, and it will be a neat experiment to see how many choose the SteamOS version of the Legion Go S over the Steam Deck or a Windows version of the same handheld.

The SteamOS version of the Legion Go S will be releasing in May, while the SteamOS beta will be releasing sooner, and could possibly start bringing compatibility to other handhelds.
