Ever since I first tried the Persona series through Persona 4 Golden, I have been a huge fan. I love the stories that ATLUS tells through them, and the balancing of social life along with fighting makes for a very engaging, enjoyable JRPG. Persona 5 has continued that trend, and to keep the world going, Persona 5: The Phantom X came to be. Unlike other games in the series, this one is a mobile gacha game, which does give me some pause, but I was ultimately excited to try it out.

The game was also released on PC, which means we can play it on the Steam Deck. With it being a mobile game, I had no worry that this would run on the Deck. I am glad it does, and it runs decently, but there are still some issues with it that I feel are important to note, though these are more with the game itself over the Deck's hardware.
Overall, Persona 5: The Phantom X is largely playable on the Steam Deck. With the right settings, it can hit 60 FPS in almost every area while still looking incredible. It's pretty amazing how great it looks and how well it runs, even if it is a mobile game, and it feels like a solid Persona experience in terms of performance. The highest quality settings go slightly below 30 FPS, and can hit around 60 FPS at the Semi-High preset starts to get around 40 FPS. However, with some settings lowered, we can get to 60 FPS and set some towards the higher range.

Here are the settings I used that gave me a mostly 60 FPS. These settings are just initially what is working for me and are subject to change for our full review:
- Dynamic Resolution: On
- Frame Rate: 60
- Render Quality: High
- 影の質:ミディアム
- エフェクトの質:ミディアム
- テクスチャークオリティ:高
- Level of Detail: Medium
- Post-Processing Effects: Medium
- Party Following: Off
- Lens Flare: Off
- Ambient Lighting: Off
- Reflections: Off
- Bloom Effects: On
- Fog Effects: On
- Volumetric Lighting: On
- Render Scale: Medium
- アンチエイリアシング:高い
- FSR: Off
The biggest issue I have is the game itself. As a mobile game, it has some slowdowns and stuttering here and there, especially when it comes to going in and out of battles. This is something I found consistent on my desktop and iPhone as well, regardless of the quality settings. This leads me to believe that it's less of a Deck issue and more of a game-specific problem. However, this is something I have seen consistently in mobile games in general, so I am not surprised.

There are also some parts of the game that don't feel great to use with a gamepad. The opening menu, navigating to the contracts and events, and leveling up your Phantom Thieves and Personas just doesn't feel great, and I regularly got confused. It made me end up using cursor mode to just select everything, which was a bit of a bummer. It feels like a mobile game a lot of the time, and while it has the Persona theme and UI, it makes me miss the small quality-of-life additions and smoothness in the mainline series.
Overall, I would consider Persona 5: The Phantom X playable experience, but not the best. It's very easy to get sucked in and performance is fantastic, but navigating through menus and the mobile game slowdowns can be a bummer. Still, I can only imagine myself playing either on my phone or on the Steam Deck, and it does the job!
Persona 5: The Phantom X can be downloaded for free through Steam.
