The Lenovo Legion Go has always been one of the Windows handhelds I have been pretty curious about. It does something wildly different than most other handheld PCs out there, focusing on a larger size with detachable controllers over a more generic design. The Legion Go 2 continued that trend, but upgraded everything from the VRR OLED screen to the Z2 Extreme APU. It’s expensive, but if you want one of the more premium mainstream devices, this is going to be it. And, just like the Legion Go S, the Legion Go 2 will be getting a new SteamOS version that will be shipping in June.

The Legion Go 2 has some fantastic features that make it very worthwhile to use as an alternative to the Steam Deck, so adding SteamOS onto it could be a worthwhile switch-over. It’s going to have the same specs as the Legion Go 2 with the Z2 Extreme APU, so expect the same 8.8-inch VRR OLED screen, up to 32GB RAM, the large 74Wh battery, and gargantuan size. It’s by far going to be the most powerful SteamOS device on the market right now.
However, while it sounds nice, there are a few aspects holding me back from excitement. It’s going to start at $1,199, which is just so expensive, and the Z2 Extreme APU is not a huge improvement over its Z1 Extreme predecessor. It does still have some great features, and the VRR OLED screen is unmatched, but it’s not going to be a huge upgrade in power over the previous iteration of the device. It may even be more worthwhile to get a Legion Go S with SteamOS or Legion Go with Bazzite to save money and get similar power.
Still, I’m excited that more options with SteamOS are coming. At this point, SteamOS is the best handheld operating system, beating the clutter of Windows that seems to be doubling down on AI. Even with Windows’ new game mode, SteamOS triumphs with its lack of bloat, speed, and versatility. As someone who would want a streamlined experience on a handheld, SteamOS will succeed where Windows fails. And with the Legion Go 2, there will be more chances for SteamOS to shine!
The Legion Go 2 with SteamOS will begin shipping in June and will start at $1,199.
