Ever since the Steam Deck, handheld PCs have been coming out left and right from more manufacturers, but older ones that have been around longer than the Steam Deck have started to gain more prominence. One of those is AYANEO, which has regularly been releasing new handhelds that push power and design, which is always exciting to see. Now, their upcoming NEXT 2 has more details, and it looks like it will be the best handheld out there once it releases.

The AYANEO NEXT 2 was previously teased as AYANEO's first handheld with the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU, which is extremely powerful when compared to the current slate of handhelds. While I didn't doubt it, more details have been announced for the NEXT 2, which confirms the AI Max+ 395 APU is included. This APU is the most powerful one out there in handhelds currently, beating out the ROG Xbox Ally X and Legion Go 2 by a good amount.
However, both GPD and OneXPlayer both have AI Max+ 395 handhelds, so AYANEO NEXT 2 stands out in a different way. The handheld will have a massive 9.06-inch OLED screen at 2400x1504 resolution (a 10:9 aspect ratio), four back buttons, and touchpads on both sides of the device. The native resolution of the screen is a little odd, but I do love OLED screens, so I can hold my judgment.

What makes it really stand out from the competition is that the AYANEO NEXT 2 has a 116Wh internal battery. Both the GPD and OneXPlayer handhelds have external, detachable batteries, but the NEXT 2 is shaping up to be the only AI Max+ 395 handheld with an internal one. On one hand, it's nice to see the battery stay inside and make the handheld all-in-one. On the other hand, I can only imagine how much it will weigh.
This is a beefy handheld from the looks of it. The other two manufacturers only sport an 80 or 85Wh battery with either a 7-inch or 8-inch screen. So, AYANEO going to 9 inches with a larger battery that is internal will mean this is going to be a very heavy handheld. I would say their releasing details without giving the weight is a pretty big tell, but I am willing to stay cautiously optimistic about it.
AYANEO also revealed the price, which is going to set us back a bit. The AI Max+ 395 handhelds will start with an early bird price of $2,299 for 64GB RAM + 1TB SSD and $3,499 for 128GB RAM + 2TB SSD. They will also be releasing an AI Max 385 APU version, which is slightly less powerful than the 395, and will start at $1,799 for 32GB RAM + 1TB SSD.

In a time when it's more difficult to afford what we need and prices for RAM and SSD going up because of AI companies like OpenAI, it may be difficult to justify $2,299 for the base 395 AYANEO NEXT 2. If you are already planning to get a GPD WIN 5 model at similar specs, which is $2,859.95, this may be a fantastic alternative. The screen, size, and power are going to be big selling points for this over the other AI Max+ 395 handheld options. However, I am concerned about the weight, which I feel could be a make-or-break here. I do like internal batteries, but after trying the GPD WIN 5 at the Tokyo Game Show, I started to like the external battery design.
Still, I won't say no to new handhelds, and I do hope this will ultimately be successful. The $3,499 price tag does make me wince a little, but with the cost of everything going up, it may make more sense to invest in one of these handhelds over trying to upgrade or build your own computer. I worry for future GPU prices specifically. I look forward to when the AYANEO NEXT 2 will launch and see what reception is from the general public.
