The Walking Dead DLC and World War Z Base Game was provided to us for review. Thank you!
Zombie games have been all the rage recently, and there have been some big games that have released recently. However, one of the few that I haven't actually played was World War Z. Despite enjoying the movie and it looking cool, I never actually found the time to play it. Now, I finally had a chance to play it to try out the upcoming Walking Dead DLC, and I have enjoyed the change of pace of not only the base game, but the new kind of gameplay the DLC brings to the table.

I never played World War Z, so this was my foray into the co-op zombie shooter, and I was not disappointed. I was playing by myself, but I was having a blast going through the levels and shooting hundreds of zombies coming at me from all angles. It was a nice change of pace from a lot of the big zombie shooters recently, which lean towards a larger, open-world RPG style. World War Z is level-based, with progression happening outside of the level, and it was actually quite refreshing.
I do wish there were a little more customization when it comes to our loadout. There isn't really any way to specifically choose the weapons or throwable items, and is instead linked directly to the class you choose. For example, the Hellraiser class starts with a Shotgun and C4, while the Gunslinger class has a Compact SMG and Frag Grenades. Class perks are geared towards the pre-determined equipment, and there is some appeal for that, but I did miss being able to pick and choose my loadout.

Then, we have The Walking Dead DLC, which added some great content to the game. There are three new story chapters following Rick Grimes and his team on a rescue mission in a prison, seeking medication for the wounded, and going back to Alexandria to defend the town that's on fire. This also comes with four new characters we can play as: Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Michonne Hawthorne, and Negan Smith, who can be played across all of the episodes in the game. We also have two new melee weapons, Negan's bat (Lucille) and Michonne's katana, and two weapon skins: Rick's revolver and Daryl's crossbow.
As a fan of The Walking Dead, this DLC does some great fan service. The team chose a great four characters to add, and all of the models look great. Considering the game can be played in third-person, being able to see ourselves as one of the characters in the flesh is awesome. The first-person mode makes using the new weapon skins nice as well; it's cool seeing Daryl's crossbow in our hands. The perks of each of the melee weapons are quite nice too, and I now default to Lucille so I can take down special zombies instantly.

The three episodes are intriguing to play through, too. Each of the episodes feels very true to The Walking Dead. Not only do the atmospheres and locations feel very Walking Dead-esque, but each of the maps is coupled with the generally slow walkers from the TV show. It's a nice touch and makes it feel closer to the show's experience, but it still feels very challenging. Each map is close quarters, and with the amount of zombies we will be seeing and the new Spiked Waler, it can get pretty difficult.
It's a nice break from the usual World War Z levels. All of the zombies are running and require quick thinking, without many breaks to just stand still and kill off the hundreds of zombies coming at us. In The Walking Dead levels, there are more spots to take it easy and slow, and having a moment to watch all the zombies going down is sweet.

I would consider this the biggest reason to actually get the DLC. The story episodes provide a very different experience from the rest of the game, going from larger areas with fast zombies to closer combat areas with slower ones. I love the change of pace from the usual, and that alone is the biggest justification I can think of for getting this. The new characters and melee weapons are great, and fans of The Walking Dead will have a blast with this, but the new style of gameplay from the new levels would make it appealing to more than just fans of the show.
And I was also surprised by how well World War Z runs on the Steam Deck. The game is rated Unsupported, and Valve says the graphics settings can't be configured to run well on the Deck, but in all of the levels I played, the game was running at above 30 FPS on the default "High" settings. I was actually surprised how well the game was running, and while there are a few modes I would need to test, I would say I am optimistic about it on the Deck. I can, with 100% certainty, say the Walking Dead levels run on the Deck nicely.

The Walking Dead DLC for World War Z is available now for $9.99, while the base game itself is on sale for $9.89 until February 5th.
