Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. has just been treated to a brand new "World Stage" update, bringing with it a new mode, aptly titled "World Stage", as well as numerous other improvements, including improved netcode.

The netcode was a bit of an issue for me when I reviewed the game on Steam Deck in February, so here's hoping the improved netcode fixes some of the issues I had with latency and disconnects. Also, World Stage adds cross-play with the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., which might also boost the player-base, which was lacking in the original. Sadly, I couldn't test the netplay, as no servers were running before launch.
I checked out the World Stage mode to see what it offers. Essentially, it's a fairly endless (not literally) gauntlet of single-player battles you must progress through to rank up and unlock new "booths" which offer more battles to go through, each progressing in difficulty. Supposedly, some of the CPUs you fight are named after real-life players, but as I'm unfamiliar with the Virtua Fighter tournament scene, it didn't mean much to me. Perhaps you only see real champions towards the end of the World Stage?

It reminds me of the "classic" mode in something like Super Smash Bros., where you try to get as far as you can against a series of opponents. However, in the World Stage, it doesn't matter if you lose; you can just try again to progress your ranking, and it even lets you fight a different character if you feel the match-up was unfair.
There are also smaller additions to the game, such as an improved training mode and the addition of Dural as a playable character for the first time, via Paid DLC.
Either way, the World Stage is a free update for Steam users, and it's great news for Virtua Fighter 5 players. Improved netcode and cross-play support, bringing in more players, should be a boost that the game sorely needs, so hopefully it keeps this one ticking for a little while longer. It's a great fighter for the Steam Deck, so I'm happy it gets this extra support.
