Fighting games on the Steam Deck can be a bit hard to enjoy. Not only do they require very precise controls, but they are best played at higher framerates, meaning they need more power in general to run. While there are some that can hit it, like Street Fighter and Tekken, others do struggle, like Mortal Kombat, and even the ones that work have very high battery drain. Still, as long as they can hit 60 and feel good, I am okay with the high drain. And it looks like there's a new fighter on the horizon that will be pretty amazing on the Deck.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. got an open beta to try out ahead of its release, and I decided to take a moment to try it out on the Steam Deck. Virtua Fighter was probably one of the first fighters I ever tried to play more seriously, so being able to come back to the series like this is nice. I played for a while, testing both offline and online modes, and I am extremely happy with the performance at this time.

I tested the game at default settings and was able to get a solid 60 FPS with a battery drain of around 17W - 19W. This is perfectly acceptable for 60 FPS play, and I was really happy with it, but it did look a little blurry. I was able to maneuver some settings to keep them looking a bit sharper while also sticking to 60 FPS. The battery did stick to a 19W - 20W drain at these settings, but 60 FPS with sharper visuals made me happy.

Since this is an open beta, this may not be indicative of the final performance, but it does give a good indicator of where it is heading. I would consider this fantastic performance for a beta, and if it does change, it will only get better. I have a feeling this will be my next big fighting game that I will be spending hours and hours practicing and playing on the Deck.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. can be pre-purchased on Steam for $15.99, which is 20% off until January 27th. You can check out and participate in the open beta by going to the store page and requesting Playtest access.
