Valve Is Rolling Out SteamOS Ratings With The Legion Go S Launch

With Lenovo's Legion Go S launching with SteamOS soon, I was curious how this would affect the Verified system. Until now, the Steam Deck Verified system was meant to give us a way to see whether a game was supported on the Steam Deck, but it was also a way to see how it works with Linux/SteamOS. However, with new handhelds coming out with SteamOS on them, this rating system has a bit of a different meaning, and that's why Valve is rolling out a new compatibility system.

To go along with the Steam Deck Verified system, we will also have a new SteamOS Compatibility system. This will note whether games, in general, are compatible with SteamOS as a whole, not just those specific to the Deck. The system will only have two ratings, Compatible and Unsupported, and will only note whether a game runs or not on SteamOS, with no regard to performance at all.

This new rating is actually based on a subset of the Steam Deck Compatibility rating, so developers don't have to do anything extra to get this new rating. It's automatically generated when you do your Verified testing, so there's no extra work that needs to be done. This new rating will only show up on any SteamOS device that isn't a Steam Deck.

I think this is a fantastic idea, and really, what I think the Deck Verified system should be like now. This not only opens up compatibility for ratings that could go on any SteamOS device, including desktops one day, but the idea behind keeping it at whether a game runs and not how it runs will make the system more accurate. I will be looking forward to seeing the new system in action and how it shows up on all devices that have SteamOS.
