Update 10/30/25 - The listing was pulled from AliExpress, so the link directs to a different Anbernic product. However, we can confirm the listing was from the same store, which is a direct partner to Anbernic.

The full spec sheet for the upcoming Anbernic RG DS has been shared on AliExpress. The listing details everything expected to be found in the device: the screen size, processor, and, most importantly, a price. Interestingly, wording in the description also hints at a launch date that may be a bit later than previously anticipated.

アンバーニックRG DS

The Anbernic RG DS is Anbernic’s latest device to mimic the style and usability of a previous flagship handheld. The RG34XX has nearly the same footprint as the device it's inspired by, the Game Boy Advance SP. While a revision to the handheld, the RG34XX SP has more deviations from the base design of the Game Boy Advance SP. However, the device still features the same 720 × 480 resolution screen found in its predecessor.

The RG DS listing details both screens as having a 640 × 480 resolution, a direct 2.5× scale from the original DS. The RG DS also has a standard 4-inch screen, slotting itself right between the original DS’s 3-inch screen and the 4.2-inch one found in the DSi XL. It remains to be seen exactly how Anbernic plans to address potential scaling issues incurred from non-integer scaling on a device with a substandard 4-inch, 480p screen, but personally, I don’t think there will be much to complain about when pairing a small screen with a small base resolution and pushing more than 2x scaling. Pair that with the shimmerless filters, and some visual worry begins to fade. There, the stress test on the RK3568 running through RetroArch with the aforementioned shaders begins to creep into the foreground.

The previously shared preview video, however, did showcase some 3DS titles, though. And RetroArch would be noticeably slower on the RG DS's chipset. Anbernic does tend to ship their devices with their own launcher relying on standalone emulators, so that may solve that puzzle when wondering how they’ve managed to get 3DS gameplay out of the device.

Also, while the RG DS was slated to be under $100, the listing places it slightly above that mark, with a price nearing $150, should you add a case on top. Granted, the listing is from one of Anbernic’s many stores on AliExpress, but not their “flagship” Anbernic Official store.

Powering the device is the Rockchip 3568, so compatibility will be suitable for most DS titles, but venturing into heavier 3D titles like Dragon Quest IX may cause slight stuttering. PSP games will pose problems if you want to play any heavier titles. However, lighter titles like Lumines or Mega Man X should also be suitable. Although the PSP runs a 16:9 aspect ratio, pairing that with the 4:3 screen mentioned in the product listing may make the handheld less optimal for those looking to cross universes and explicitly play PSP titles on a device meant for DS games.

Within the listing, there are also mentions of pre-sale pricing being active until December 15. While that date is about two months out, it does allow for wiser shopping decisions as we head into the holiday season. Although the market may continue to shift and evolve, Anbernic offers gamers a long period to purchase the handheld before it reaches its full price. However, the listing is inactive for now, simply showing “Sold Out.” We will be watching and updating our article once it has gone live.

The listing shows that the handheld will have a hodgepodge of original DS-inspired colorways: black and crimson red, turquoise blue, and polar white. Black and crimson red were highly sought-after colors for the DS Lite when it originally released, turquoise blue was introduced to set the DSi apart from the rest of the family, and polar white remains a fan-favorite color for both the DS Lite and DSi (and DSi XL). Just like the RG34XX and 34XX SP before it, the RG DS looks to tap directly into nostalgia and deliver a handheld that connects directly with what gamers may remember while introducing a few new niceties.

Native SD card support, dual Hall effect analog sticks, native Bluetooth (and Wi-Fi), stereo speakers, and 3 GB of RAM paired with 32 GB of onboard storage. While the AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS look to best target 3DS emulation, Anbernic has made it clear that it is targeting DS and doing so with what the company deems best of what the market can currently deliver.

AnbernicRGDSSpecSheet

The biggest question going into the RG DS will be the screen and how non-integer scaling affects visuals. The processor is fine for targeting DS, like the then-bog-standard H700 was fine for targeting GBA. The real question will be how well the handheld will perform — but judging by past releases, there’s little doubt it will fall short of expectations.
