While I play a lot of games on my Steam Deck, I still love finding time to play Switch games. Recently, I have been loving Pokémon Z-A and Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 on my Switch 2, and I find it a nice, enjoyable reprieve from my large PC library. Still, it has been interesting to see how the experience could be pushed by emulating on PC, and even though I tend to stay away from Switch emulation, it's an interesting topic.
After Yuzu was shut down, other emulators appeared in its wake. One of those is Citron, which reminds me of the 3DS emulator Citra. It's a way to emulate and play your Switch games on PC, and it just got a new update that has some pretty amazing improvements.

While SteamDeckHQ does support emulation and preservation, we do NOT support piracy. We will never link to any websites or sources to download any ROMs under any circumstance.
Local Multiplayer Support And Enhanced Online Features
There are a couple of pretty significant updates here, with the first one being online functionality. There have been some big enhancements, including local multiplayer support for compatible games, better compatibility with the newest titles, better stability, and a complete account service implementation for proper account handling. This should make playing games with online multiplayer better and easier, with functionality that is based on official SwitchBrew documentation.
Better Homebrew And Mod Compatibility
There have also been some improvements to homebrew content and mods. There's now 32-bit code offset support, which enables Skyline-compatible homebrew and other mods. It improves the homebrew ecosystem compatibility overall, which is quite nice to see when it comes to mods.
Speaking of mods, there have been some specific support added for the popular Mario Kart 8 DX mod: CTGP-DX. This mod adds in 16 cups worth of custom levels, and with this update, the entire track pack should be playable with correct texture support.
Theme System Overhaul And Hotkey Improvements
On top of those, the UI got some big enhancements as well. The theme system has been improved, automatically going with the theme of your system, and can override the theme if you choose to. All dialogues adapt correctly to the theme, and there have been some display issues that were corrected for a more consistent experience all around.
There were also some hotkey configuration fixes, since some weren't saved correctly, and there has been a dedicated hotkey for the overlay that has been added.
Android Gets Diverse Support
In the post with the update changelog, it was said that this is a major update for mobile, and while some of these fixes and enhancements do affect Android and mobile platforms, there was nothing initially that seemed to focus on mobile enhancements. However, a little further down the changelog, we get some platform-specific fixes, and I can see how support has been greatly improved.
There are only two fixes here, specifically for storage configuration and better support for different GPU hardware. This should help out a lot on many different devices, especially Android handhelds like the AYN Thor, which may see some benefit from these changes.
Auto-Updater Overhaul For Windows
One of the final big parts of this update is the completely redesigned update system for Windows. Now, the updates should no longer faul, will apply after Citron closes, secure the downloads, improve the diagnostics, and implement proper HTTPS support. These fixes are only for Windows right now, but Linux and MacOS auto updators are on the known issues log.
And those are the highlights from this update! There were some other architectural changes and fixes, but these were the highlights from the update. It's definitely interesting to see, and I can't wait to see what else will be improved in future builds. For now, I am heading back into Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 on my Switch 2!
Citron can be downloaded easily through EmuDeck, and you can follow our guide on how to get EmuDeck set up if you don't have it yet.
