With the Soulframe Founder Packs out in the wild, we finally have a clearer picture of what Digital Extremes is crafting, and it’s quickly becoming one of the most intriguing upcoming RPGs on the radar. Soulframe isn’t just “Warframe but fantasy”, it’s a slower, more deliberate, more grounded experience built around heavy melee combat in a mystical world bound to nature, and an almost dreamlike aesthetic that feels equal parts ancient folklore and ethereal high fantasy.

At its core, Soulframe is shaping up to be a melee-focused action RPG where timing, commitment, and positioning matter far more than the hyper-mobility Warframe players are used to. Every swing has weight, every dodge has intention, and every encounter feels like you’re carving your way through a living, breathing fable. The world, an ever-shifting realm corrupted by industry and imbalance, leans heavily into exploration, puzzle-filled environments, and creatures that feel like they stepped out of a forgotten legend.

The release of the Founder Packs doesn’t just mark the start of early community building; it also gives us our best look yet at Soulframe’s systems, tone, and long-term vision. Early glimpses highlight an interconnected open world, emergent dungeon-like areas called Archives, and a focus on building bonds with companions and factions deeply tied to the world’s natural spirit. Even the game’s day/night cycles and musical elements have an almost ritualistic feel, hinting at a world where rhythm and nature matter as much as steel.

What’s immediately clear is that Soulframe wants to stand apart rather than ride Warframe’s identity. Where Warframe is sleek, fast, and sci-fi, Soulframe is earthy, deliberate, and mythic. Where Warframe overwhelms with spectacle, Soulframe invites you to slow down and sink into its atmosphere. It’s a bold pivot—one that could make it one of 2025’s most unique RPGs if Digital Extremes sticks the landing.

With the Founders era now underway, all that’s left is watching how the game evolves as more of the community steps in. If the game truly becomes the soulful, nature-bound adventure it’s promising to be, this could easily be Digital Extremes’ next long-running universe.

With Soulframe being in early access and not on Steam yet, we do have to get it set up manually and add it directly to Steam. This is exactly how we got it set up:

Steam Deck Installation Guide

  1. Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode (Steam button → Power → Switch to Desktop).
  2. Open a browser and download the Soulframe installer (.msi) from the official website.
  3. Open Steam (in Desktop Mode).
  4. Go to Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  5. Click Browse, change the file type filter to All Files, and select the Soulframe .msi installer.
  6. Add it to your Steam library.
  7. Right-click the entry → Properties → Compatibility → enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool → choose Proton Experimental (or the newest Proton).
  8. Launch the Soulframe entry to run the installer and let it download all game files.
  9. Switch back to Gaming Mode.
  10. Launch Soulframe from your Non-Steam games list.

Steam Deck Performance - Soulframe

With a game still in Early Access and not yet on Steam, no less, it’s expected that Soulframe performs somewhat poorly on Steam Deck, but the out-of-the-box settings are more abysmal than one had hoped. With a wildly fluctuating frame rate, usually maxing out in the high teens, coupled with an aggressive motion blur, it’s nigh-on unplayable. Thankfully, with a handful of changes, the game is not only playable but highly enjoyable, offering only a slight downgrade from a full desktop offering.

Our recommended settings are as follows:

  • Display Mode - Borderless Fullscreen
  • Aspect Ratio - 16:10
  • Vertical Sync - Off
  • Max Framerate - 40 Hz
  • Upscaling Method - FSR2.2
  • Quality - Quality
  • Graphics Quality Preset - Medium
  • Volumetric Lighting - Off
  • Local Reflections - Off

The settings below aren’t as essential in hitting a stable play environment, but are more recommendations for a more enjoyable time spent throughout Soulframe:

  • Motion Blur - Off
  • Glare - Off
  • Film Grain - Off
  • Bloom - Off

With these combined settings, Soulframe performs wonderfully, offering near-stable 40fps across the board, with the exception of loading into some of the dungeon-like areas and cutscenes. Minor fluctuations are still present outside of these two aforementioned examples, but they’re rarely impactful or dire enough to cause concern whatsoever.

Soulframe is in early access, and you can gain access to it via Twitch drops or purchasing a Founders Pack from their website. You can also wishlist it on Steam, since it will be releasing there as well.
