Retroid has announced via its Discord channel that the upcoming launch of the Retroid Pocket 6 will be slightly delayed for most customers.

The Retroid Pocket 6 (RP6) began shipping on January 15th, but today, Retroid shared that only around 100 orders of the black joystick on top variant shipped yesterday.

This limitation is due to efficiency constraints in the RP6 OLED screen calibration and demura process, as the device uses a customized OLED panel and the factory currently lacks prior experience with OLED calibration. At present, each panel takes roughly ten minutes to calibrate during trial production. Last week, Retroid purchased a brand new parallel demura calibration system utilizing twelve cameras and robotic arms, allowing up to twelve OLED panels to be calibrated and programmed at the same time.

Currently, the main issue Retroid is facing with OLED production is the learning curve associated with this new calibration process, which has slowed down throughput as each unit makes its way toward shipment. Debugging of the new equipment is expected to be completed by Monday evening.

Retroid expects screen production capacity to increase by approximately ten times starting today. There will be no shipments today while the upgrade is finalized, with mass shipments of the Retroid Pocket 6 beginning tomorrow. Black units will ship first, including both joystick on top and dpad on top variants, and Retroid plans to produce two colors simultaneously each working day to maintain fairness and reduce production inefficiencies.

The Retroid Pocket 6 is the newest flagship release from Retroid. Last year, the Retroid Pocket 5 and Retroid Pocket Mini appeared on numerous end of year lists, despite the Mini facing multiple rounds of controversy surrounding its reported screen specifications. With the Retroid Pocket 6, it appears Retroid is getting ahead of any potential disappointment within the retro community by being as transparent as possible, even when delays are small and temporary.

Retroid has also stated that its shipping dashboard will begin receiving updates starting Wednesday, and the company has shared photos from the factory to help reassure customers that key production materials are readily available.
