Now Ra Ra BOOM is a video game title I can get behind! Although it's not scheduled to launch until August at the earliest, I had the opportunity to try it early and experiment with it in a special preview build. After my time with it, I’m looking forward to playing more of this one, and the Steam Deck performance is promising so far!

Ra Ra BOOM exudes a unique charm in a co-op beat 'em up. Set in a future Earth under siege from deadly AI, the game opens with a team of space cheerleaders stepping up to save the day. As the debut title from Gylee Games, the game's production quality is solid, with some great voice acting. I dabbled in the early tutorials and experimented with a couple of characters to get a feel for the gameplay, and the charm is undeniable.

At its heart, Ra Ra BOOM plays like a side scroller in that you must destroy waves of enemies with a mix of brutal melee and ranged combat. The gameplay loop, while simple on the surface, has a real kick, thanks to the fast-paced action and the variety of enemies you'll face. Each character has their unique skill set, and you can get close and personal with the evil enemy AI or blast them from a distance.
While the game is heavily advertised as a co-op experience, the solo mode is reasonably solid. Creating an enjoyable game in solo and multiplayer modes is incredibly challenging due to the different expectations for each mode. Still, it manages the difficulty of this task well. I need to play the game with more people for a better impression, though I tend to prefer playing solo if I can help it.

Ra Ra BOOM has some gorgeous visual presentations. It feels like a Saturday morning cartoon show, with its vibrant and colorful environments and lively battle animations. With their playful design and animations, even the menus have more life to them than they have any right to be. Persona 5 still wins the ‘Badass Menu’ game award if those exist, but everything oozes character from the visuals to the music, and it’s hard to be miserable when playing it.
The game heavily favors using a controller in terms of controls and overall gameplay. While it works decently enough with a keyboard and mouse, all the prompts assume you use a gamepad. That's great news for us Steam Deck followers, but not so great for those who want to play it on a PC. Despite that, it plays well enough. The character movements are snappy and responsive with both control layouts, and I found the mix of melee and gunplay quite absorbing. The combat isn’t particularly complicated, but it all feels solid so far. However, the key binding customization was limited in the preview build I played, so hopefully, this issue will be addressed for the launch.

Although this preview build lacks graphical options, I found the game playable on the Steam Deck. The performance is acceptable, although I hope the game includes more accessibility options at launch. It is too soon to judge, although the signs of Steam Deck compatibility are promising.
While I only saw the whole game on offer, I’m intrigued by the game and what I have played. I enjoyed my time with Ra Ra BOOM so far and I can't wait to play more of it when it releases. Hopefully, we will get a release date for the game confirmed soon, but in the meantime, you can play the demo to try it out yourself!
