It still stuns me how amazing emulation is and how it advances, and it just keeps getting better and better. RPCS3 is one of my favorites currently, giving much-needed life to old PS3 games that may be lost to time. Yesterday, the developers posted about a new update to the emulator, bringing a feature that I didn't expect to see, but am still very happy about.

Over on Twitter/X, the RPCS3 team posted about the emulator now supporting Multi-Slot Savestates, courtesy of GitHub user elad335, who is also the lead core developer. This means that we can hold multiple savestates, going back to earlier ones if preferred. It's a really nice idea that could be useful for reversing decisions that we don't realize we want to reverse until it's too late.

For some background, a savestate is essentially a snapshot of a game at a particular point in time. It allows us to save the game whenever we want, even when there aren't any in-game save points around. It's very helpful for older emulators where the games don't have good save systems, and while the PS3 isn't one of them, it's still a nice tool to have just in case.

On top of being able to create multiple savestates, we also have brand new shortcuts for them. Using Ctrl+Alt+1-4, we can select from the four most recent savestates to immediately circle back to. It's a nice feature, and I couldn't be happier to have it!

You can update your install of RPCS3 just by opening the emulator and selecting yes. However, if you accidentally select no, or the window just doesn't show up, you can go to the Help tab and check for updates. If you don't have RPCS3, you can get it from their website, EmuDeck, or RetroDECK. You can follow our guide on how to install EmuDeck, while RetroDECK can just be installed from the Discover Store.
