Perfect Dark's Reboot May Be Canceled, But The Original's Native PC Port Is Great on Steam Deck

During the summer Xbox Games Showcase last year, there were many fantastic trailers shown off, but none stunned me like the Perfect Dark reboot. It looked incredible, and right up my alley. Unfortunately, Xbox laid off thousands of workers yesterday, as well as canceled multiple projects that really looked incredible. One of them was the Perfect Dark reboot, as well as the closure of the studio developing it: The Initiative.

My heart goes out to the thousands of people affected by these layoffs. It's tough to see so many incredible, hard-working individuals being terminated from their jobs, even when the company is seemingly doing well. The gaming industry can be very tough sometimes, and this is just another example of that.

While I am sad about Perfect Dark's reboot being canceled, we can at least still enjoy the original today. It is part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion, as well as the remaster being a part of the Xbox Game Pass. However, for those of us on PC and the Steam Deck, there are two options we have. We could emulate the game, and with the emulator's features, it could be a great experience, but there's a much better option that comes with significantly better support, more features, and is native to PCs: Perfect Dark Decompilation.

The decompilation project, which is in active development by fgsfdsfgs (great name) on GitHub, transforms the original Nintendo 64 release and turns it into a native PC application. This results in a more stable game with better features, mod support, and more. In this case, we have dual analog controller support, configurable field of view, 60 FPS support with fixes for the higher framerate issues, basic mod support, expanded memory heap size, and emulation for the Transfer Pak functionality so you can unlock some cheats automatically.

It's also extremely easy to set up on the Steam Deck, though there are a couple of steps. You need to head over to GitHub and download the x86_64-linux version of the decompilation. Then, you will have to dump the ROM for the original Nintendo 64 game. There are recommendations for which version you should have on the GitHub page.

We will not be posting or linking to any ROMs directly and do not condone piracy.

After you have that, put the game in the data folder and rename it to "pd.ntsc-final" to make sure the decompilation program recognizes it. After that, all you have to do is launch the application, and you are good to go! The version of the game you have will change depending on which executable you choose to run the game. Once you figure it out, you will right-click it and add it to Steam:

• NTSC = pd.x86_64
• PAL = pd.pal.x86_64
• JPN = pd.jpn.x86_64

Once you are in game mode, you can launch it directly! Change the name of the non-Steam shortcut as you please, but there is one thing I would change in-game. Once you launch the game and make your profile, I recommend going into the options and changing the resolution to 1280x800. You can find it in the Extended menu under Video. Otherwise, controller support and everything else should work right out of the box. I also recommend setting the SteamOS framerate and refresh rate to 60.

And with this being a decompilation, performance and battery life are incredible It plays at a perfect 60 FPS with no drops and battery drain that sticks below 7W most of the time. This means we can get over 8 hours of battery life on the OLED Steam Deck and over 5.5-6 hours on the LCD. It's a flawless experience, and one that I would consider unmatched compared to the emulated version.

We may never see the Perfect Dark reboot that stunned me in its first gameplay trailer last year, but I am glad we can still experience the original in the best possible way. I love the work fgsfdsfgs is doing and I can't wait to see how the decompilation project continues.
