The battle of the AI Max+ 395 handhelds is heating up, and I am overwhelmingly excited to see it. With AYANEO announcing their AYANEO NEXT 2 handheld, which looks like an AYANEO KUN, One-Netbook has launched their OneXFly Apex over on IndieGoGo, giving us a chance to pre-order the device ahead of its release.

ワンエックスフライ アペックス

The big appeal of these handhelds, including the Apex, is the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU that is inside, giving us insane power that can't be matched by any current mainstream handheld like the ROG Xbox Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go 2. However, this power does come at a cost, and it can be very costly for sure.

There are four models of the Apex, and each of them has a standard or liquid-cooled version. The cheapest model is $1,399 or $1,459 (liquid-cooled), and uses the AI Max 385 APU, which isn't as powerful as the 395, but still going to beat any mainstream handheld out now. Then, we have three models with the AI Max+ 395 APU:

  • 48GB RAM + 1TB Storage = $1,599 (Standard) or $1,659 (Liquid-Cooled)
  • 64GB RAM + 2TB Storage = $1,799 (Standard) or $1,859 (Liquid-Cooled)
  • 128GB RAM + 2TB Storage = $2,239 (Standard) or $2,299 (Liquid-Cooled)

Each of these models comes with the detachable 85Wh external battery. However, the liquid-cooled version is an interesting one. That model has a different cooling system internally, making it a little bit heavier as well as $60 more. I would assume it also needs the Frost Bay unit for liquid cooling, which is an extra $199. It also seems that the cable to play with the battery detached is also considered an optional accessory and is purchasable for an extra $19.

Still, this is an interesting piece of hardware. I have always liked OneXPlayer's device management software, so seeing it return is always a joy, and there are multiple slots to expand our storage, including a Mini SSD and MicroSD expansion slot with an additional M.2 2280 slot inside. The screen is a 120Hz native landscape LCD screen with VRR support, and of course, the incredible AI Max+ 395 chip inside. The GPU module is more powerful than the RTX 4060 laptop card, and has 8 more CPU cores than the Z2 Extreme.

It looks like there will also be a built-in AI local assistant, which can automatically set up multiple different AI models like Deepseek, Llama 4, and Qwen that are all usable offline. I have always had a complicated relationship with AI, especially since our content does get scraped and stolen by Google for AI search summaries and such, but I am sure this appeals to some people.
