It should come as no surprise that the Nintendo Switch 2 is pretty popular. So popular, in fact, that would-be customers in certain territories - most notably the US and Japan - are having trouble securing such a sought-after pre-order. Thus, the cycle of new console hype continues.
Customers who had hoped to pre-order via the official My Nintendo Store had to enter a lottery system first. Upon being selected, they would be guaranteed the aforementioned honour of reserving the coveted successor to 2017's Nintendo Switch. The likelihood of that happening, however, now seems slimmer. Nintendo has announced that the number of participants in the Switch 2 lottery has far exceeded their estimations.
Via an announcement on Twitter, Nintendo posted a lengthy explanation as to the hows and whys of it all, stating that 2.2 million people in Japan alone had entered the lottery and would, therefore, far exceed the number of Nintendo Switch 2 units that could be delivered from the My Nintendo Store site come launch day, June 5th. This first lottery draw has come and gone - April 24th, just a few days ago as of this article's publishing - and, should you have been on any social media since then, you would have undoubtedly seen disappointment aplenty.
A second lottery is due shortly, with any unsuccessful entries from the first draw automatically being entered for this one. Regardless, Nintendo has warned that there will still be numerous entries that won't get selected and will, consequently, have to look elsewhere.
However, it's potentially not all doom and gloom. Vendors far and wide have started accepting pre-orders and pre-registrations, with many internet denizens having already secured theirs that way. It's not to say it's without struggle, but the chance is there, should you have the patience and/or have your soon-to-be frail index finger over the F5 key.

Over here in the United Kingdom, it was, arguably, as easy as I've ever found the process. I checked Bluesky on April 3rd between working and drinking copious amounts of Dr Pepper, saw that pre-orders had unceremoniously gone live for a few retailers, and grabbed the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle. I managed the same for the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller a month later. I don't know why the UK has it easy this time around. Still, I'm hoping that the general availability of this console doesn't mirror the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X/S fiasco that we had back in 2020, where consoles weren't readily available for near-18 months post-launch.
May the odds be ever in your favour, for those of you that have yet to secure the Nintendo Switch 2.
