Every month, Valve sends out a survey to some of its users to gauge what the most popular operating systems and configurations are from accounts on Steam. It's interesting to see it as well, showing the most popular CPUs, GPUs, operating systems, and even VR headsets and resolutions. This also appears on the Steam Deck, allowing them to include our handhelds in the survey. Now that it's October, we have a brand new survey edition to check out, and to my surprise, Linux has passed the 3% mark!

Steam Hardware Survey

In what appears to be the first time, Linux as an operating system has passed the 3% mark of users in the survey. Specifically, it is at 3.05%, with notable gains specifically with Bazzite, Ubuntu, and Mint. Interestingly, SteamOS went down a little bit, but even still, the gains were enough to bring Linux overall up! It still seems SteamOS is the most popular Linux OS right now, though, with a 27.18%, along with the Deck's custom GPU being the most popular on Linux.

The survey also shows off the most popular GPU overall, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, along with the Meta Quest 3 being the most popular VR headset, 16GB RAM as the most popular system RAM, and 1920x1080 as the most popular display resolution. I am also surprised that 6-core CPUs are more popular than 8-core, but it's only by about 3%.

You can check out the survey for yourself over on Steam.
