The upcoming Lovecraftian horror first-person shooter Decadent, developed by Fulqrum Publishing and Incantation Games, is shaping up to be a mind-bending experience. I mean, come on, who doesn't enjoy a little cosmic horror with some sanity-breaking gameplay? Decadent appears to take the intriguing idea of combining psychological horror with first-person shooter gameplay in some very unexpected ways.

You play as John Lorn, a war veteran, who has been exploring the occult (because, you know, that usually ends well). Tracing a misplaced expedition and your presumed missing son leads you to the Arctic after a disastrous experiment leaves you infected by a parasite. On top of that, your sanity is slipping away the entire time, which brings us neatly on to our next point.

The game's disturbing reactions to your character's worsening mental condition are a result of their Madness system. As you progress through the game, you'll notice changes in visual distortions, hallucinations, and even gameplay mechanics. I'm always up for a game that throws you for a loop!

To me, the most striking thing is that insanity isn't merely a punishment; it's a choice. Although succumbing to insanity hinders character control, it grants access to abilities such as pre-event enemy sensing. The concept of a system that requires you to continually make such a concrete, psychological trade-off between potential benefits and costs appeals to me. I get the impression that Decadent will put players in tense predicaments, forcing you to walk a fine line between holding on to their mind and completely losing it.

Decadent still has a lot of mystery surrounding it, but if this visually impressive trailer is anything to go by, I can't wait to find out what happens next. Here’s hoping this game will add a fresh new spin on first-person Lovecraftian horror.
