I play tons of new games nowadays, for a plethora of reasons, but I’ll never forget the games I started my account with. My first games were Garry’s Mod and Counter-Strike: Source, and I loved them, but one of my favorites was easily E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy. The futuristic first-person shooter was captivating in its world and RPG elements, which allowed a lot of freedom to build out your character and tackle objectives in the open level as we pleased. Even today, I still find myself going back and playing for fun. So, as soon as I heard the developers of E.Y.E., Streum On Studios, were making a new game, I was all in. Then, I got a chance to play it, and it’s exactly what I hoped it would be.

Daimon Blades is a reboot of the same IP that E.Y.E. is a part of, so we will see lots of familiar faces, but the entire gameplay loop is different. The game takes place 2,000 years before E.Y.E., so it makes sense. Instead of shooting, we have a melee combat focus, getting up close and slashing through monsters around us. It’s brutal, gory, and oh so satisfying. We will have different moves like heavy attacks, ranged shots, dash attacks, and an ultimate move, but even just striking with a basic swing is so satisfying. Heads fly off, torsos are cut in two, and it’s a constant adrenaline rush. It was so gratifying to fight an armored enemy, dash behind him, and cut his armor off until I could decapitate him.

Though it won’t be just swords we use. The game has six weapon types to choose from on early access release, including different types of swords and hammers. These can range from massive, damage-dealing beasts that take a while to swing to lighter, shorter weapons with a due or tot added blocking, but don’t deal much damage. I went with a great sword in my play through, and it was a blast having the damage to destroy and decapitate them. That part was so much fun, but there’s much more to love.

At its core, Daimon Blades is rogue-like, which means it has a solid amount of replayability. We will go into runs, slice through enemies, and try to get newer and better gear to equip. There are two game modes, one focused on story and one focused on free exploration, and there are different starting points for each. The main draw to keep going back in is to get better gear to make yourself more powerful as you keep going in and try to either complete the story or get further in.

Then, we have the progression mechanics. The more obvious one is a simple leveling-up system, where we can increase our stats to boost different aspects of our character, like health and attack. However, there's more. As you level up, you will also be able to develop new abilities, which will depend on your grade. This grade goes up as you level up, with different and more powerful abilities to use.

However, the biggest part of progression comes from Daimons. Each weapon you get comes with a randomized Daimon that is infused into your weapon. The Daimon has its own powers to buff you and is completely randomized with each new weapon. As you kill enemies, your ascension level will go up, making your Daimon more powerful and giving you more perks like extra critical damage or better parry timing. You will also get special currency while playing, which can upgrade your Daimon's randomized skills.

But what makes Daimons so interesting to me is their relationship mechanic. The better you treat your Daimon and give it what it needs, the more it will reward you with buffs. However, if you don't, and your Daimon dislikes you, and the more you die, your corrupt bar will go up and affect you in different ways. It's interesting how your Daimon can affect the way you play, and the balance of having to keep them happy while making them more powerful is engaging.

When it comes to how Daimon Blades will run on the Steam Deck, the team is optimistic. Controller support is being finalized, and in the early access section on the Steam Store page, Streum On Studios mentions that they are working on both controller and "handheld platform support." After talking to the team, I have full confidence that this will be another great game to play on the go by 1.0 launch, and with how incredible the game is already, I couldn't be more excited for its very soon early access release.
