There were so many great games I had a chance to check out at Gamescom, and a few of them stand out in my mind for their unique ideas and addictive gameplay. However, there's one game that stands above the rest. Not because it was better, but because it was so gruesome and disturbing that I actually told the developers how insane this kind of game is. Yet, I should have known going into it to expect something bad, but I never expected something so true to the IP that I had to do a couple of double-takes. Still, even though I had to take a moment, the general gameplay was so much fun. And because of that, Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is my most memorable game of this year's Gamescom.

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival

Looking at the Steam store page, the pictures don't do it justice. Hellraiser revolves around this sadomasochistic theme where pleasure is derived from pain, and it ends up happening in some of the most horrifying ways. The game is no different. As soon as I sat down, the opening sequence was with our protagonist, Aidan, having aggressive sex with Sunny, getting pierced with needles, and eventually, cutting her with the Lament Configuration, which fans of the series will be familiar with. This inadvertently opens up a portal for the Cenobites. After a run through the Cenobites' labyrinth, the room is reset, and we watch as the Cenobites, led by Pinhead himself, use chains to start pulling Sunny's skin off her body.

None of it is censored, and that's consistent throughout the entire game. Sunny is fully naked in the opening scene as we watch the skin being removed from her body, exposing her muscles underneath. After this traumatic experience, Aidan is captured by a sadomasochistic cult that wants to use the Lament Configuration for their own purposes. This is where I really started playing the game.

We proceed to break out and try to escape this place. Just like in Hellraiser's opening, there are bodies of naked men and women all around, which have been cut and tortured by the members of the cult. We will have to not only navigate the corridors of this building, taking down and killing members of the cult, all appropriately dressed in revealing gimp suits, but also run away from Cenobites that are coming to attack us. The game is extremely detailed, and it makes all the grotesque details just pop.

But this isn't just a horror-filled experience; it is backed up with solid gameplay. Outside of running around, we do have a trusty gun to help us survive. The gunplay feels great, with headshots that are actually one-hit kills on enemies. I don't particularly enjoy bullet-sponge enemies, so this was very welcome. Otherwise, it felt tight and weighty, making each shot count. Developer Saber Interactive is extremely malleable and has been working on so many different kinds of games, ranging from third-person shooters to realistic simulators, so I have a ton of faith in the team's abilities.

There also seems to be some malleability to the gunplay. While the session wasn't long, I was able to shoot a grenade out of someone's hand and watch her explode in a fiery blast. Apparently, I was the first to do that, and possibly the only person to do so at Gamescom since my appointment was one of the final ones. It made me feel great, but I also figured that there would be some cool things we could do during combat. There are some light crafting mechanics as well, which I had to use to craft bandages to heal.

When I finished my session, I looked back at the developers behind me and told them how horrifying and grotesque the game is, and I meant it as a compliment. This is Hellraiser, and while I was not expecting it to be so graphic, Saber did the IP justice by keeping it so brutal. Even though I am going to have to brace myself, I am super excited for Hellraiser: Revival, and I am worryingly pumped for its release.
