Ever since I first played it on the GameCube, I have loved Animal Crossing. It never really clicked for me until New Leaf, where I was enjoying it on the DS, but it's an awesome, relaxing game. I enjoyed Animal Crossing: New Horizons just as much, and I couldn't stop playing it when it released. I was a little sad when updates stopped coming, but it looks like we are in for at least one more hurrah, and I couldn't be happier.
Announced earlier today, New Horizons will be getting a dedicated Switch 2 update, alongside a free update next year. It will bring new features, locations, and even new residents we can encounter. It looks super exciting, and I am overjoyed that I will have a new reason to go back to my island.
Here is everything coming to the Switch 2 version and the free 3.0 update:
Switch 2 Edition
There will be enhanced resolution and graphics overall, which is pretty commonplace for games getting a Switch 2 version over their original. We will also see Joy-Con 2 mouse controls added in, and this will come in handy for redecorating your home, drawing custom designs, and writing messages on the messanger board. There's also a new item that can utilize the microphone on the Switch 2 to call out to residents in your town.
There are also some expanded online features. This includes increasing the limit to 12 players online with Game Chat support, as long as everyone has a Switch 2 and faces can appear over your character if you are using a supported camera.

The Switch 2 version will be available on January 15th next year, and those who already own the game can get the upgrade pack at a cheaper cost.
Free Update (3.0)
We are kicking off the new update with a brand new location, a resort hotel that extends out into the water. It's run by Kapp'n's family, and you will help out by decorating guest rooms with designated themes to make sure they enjoy their stay and recommending outfits for guests to wear. You will earn hotel tickets after decorating rooms to get some hotel-themed items that are exclusive to the shop. Amiibo can be scanned as well to invite specific guests over. You can also craft specific DIY items that can be turned in for more hotel tickets.

The update also increases the maximum storage capacity from 5,000 to 9,000 items, allowing us to upgrade two more times. You can also now store trees, shrubs, and flowers. Resetti also makes a return with a new cleaning service, allowing us to reset specific areas of our island. Items he collects can be stored or thrown away completely.
There's also a brand new dream world. This brings you to Slumber Island, where you can decorate with whatever you want, modify the island's terrain, easily add inclines, change the weather at a whim, and bring whichever residents you want. It's essentially a sandbox where you can make the island of your dreams. You can make three islands at once, choosing to start with a preset of the small, medium, or large islands. This can also all be done in multiplayer, creating and modifying the island with friends in real-time.

There are also some new collaboration items coming to the game. There will also be some new Nintendo products available at the hotel, including classic Nintendo systems and toys. Some of these can be interactable and play some classic games, as long as you have an online membership. There are also some LEGO furnitire and clothing that can be bought through Tom Nook.
There are also a new Legend of Zelda and Splatoon collaboration, where you can get new furniture using specific amiibo. There will also be four new villagers that can show up, with two being themed from Zelda (Tulin and Mineru) and two from Splatoon (Cece and Viche, both dressing familiarly to Splatoon characters), and can be invited to stay on your island permanently.
The free update will also be coming out the same day as the Switch 2 version, on January 15th next year.
I loved Animal Crossing when it first released, and it looks like I have a new reason to get back into the game. I am especially excited for the Switch 2 version, though I am a little saddened that there won't be a framerate increase. Still, I can't wait to find those Legend of Zelda items and bring Mineru to my island.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be purchased on the Nintendo eShop for $59.99 right now, but if you have a Switch 2, you will still need to purchase the upgrade pack when it releases in January.
