Anbernic has officially launched its newest retro handheld, the RG477V. It is the latest device to come from the company, joining a lineup that has already expanded across six separate releases. This newest handheld keeps a familiar Game Boy-inspired orientation while pushing more power than the company’s previous RG476H and matching the performance of the more expensive RG477M.

Anbernic RG477V

Over the past few months, Anbernic has been largely focused on their two aforementioned handhelds. The RG476H features a 960p display, allowing for clean 4x integer scaling on most retro home consoles, while the RG477M uses the same screen paired with a generational chipset upgrade.

The RG476H is also, as highlighted by its name, a horizontal handheld that mimics the orientation of devices like the Sony PSP or, more recently, the Nintendo Switch. Typically, as with past releases such as the RG406H and RG406V, the company would release two devices in the same family: one vertical and one horizontal. This time, however, Anbernic has somewhat merged those upgrade lines. The RG477M is a metal handheld, and metal variants are usually paired with a cheaper plastic counterpart. Instead of releasing a vertical version of the RG476, the end result is a vertical, plastic version of the RG477.

Using the RG477V for the emulation of home consoles like the PS2 and GameCube should deliver positive results. The RG477M, which shares the same MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset, achieves near full compatibility with PS2 and GameCube titles. Switch emulation is still very much a work in progress, but the Dimensity 8300 should provide the strongest performance currently available across Anbernic’s more modern handhelds.

Recently, Anbernic uploaded an unboxing video showcasing the handheld’s most important features, including its analog sticks, overall build, and design, along with brief gameplay footage. While the video focuses on the unboxing experience itself, stay tuned to SteamDeckHQ for a full breakdown and deeper details once our review and first impressions go live.

If you are interested in purchasing the RG477V, you can do so on their website, and it is currently discounted for $199. For the latest Anbernic-related news, you can also follow the company on Twitter.
