Anbernic has officially revealed its newest emulation handheld, the RG477V. Until now, the only other handheld in the 477 family has been the RG477M, a powerful Android device with a $250 USD price tag, due in part to its full-metal casing.

Anbernic uses a simple naming strategy for most of its releases, and in this case, RG stands for Retro Game. The next two numbers refer to the screen size, and the final number marks the chipset generation. These generations follow Anbernic’s own system, but the rule is straightforward. Each number represents an improvement over the last. 7 outperforms 6, 6 outperforms 5, and so on. And any letter at the end of the name signals the type of build. M marks metal, P marks plastic, H marks horizontal, and V marks vertical.

With that in mind, we can decode the basics of this handheld. The RG477V uses a 4.7-inch screen and the same seventh-generation chipset found in the RG477M, the Dimensity 8300, which should be capable of most games from the older generations and up to the Switch. And as we can see at the end of the name, it will be a vertical device.

Anbernic has a long history of releasing both vertical and horizontal designs. When a device launches in one orientation, the other usually follows a few months later. Metal builds often break this pattern, but the RG477M’s success made it likely that a non-metal vertical version would show up eventually. That moment has arrived.

In the thirty-second reveal video, Anbernic shows the device in both glossy black and a DMG Game Boy-themed colorway.

The official specifications have not been published yet, but they will likely match the RG477M.

Anbernic RG477M Specs

Display: 4.7 inch LTPS In Cell TFT panel
Resolution: 1280 x 960 at 120 Hz
CPU: Mediatek Dimensity 8300
RAM: 8 GB or 12 GB
Storage: 128 GB or 256 GB
OS: Android 14
Battery: 5300 mAh

Based on the design shown, the RG477V appears to be a vertical version of the RG476H, with the updated hardware from the RG477M. The only major exception is the lack of any GameCube-inspired Indigo colorway. Everything else indicates a design that mirrors the RG476H.

Anbernic is currently facing a wave of controversy over the RG DS, a new dual-screen emulation handheld marketed and promoted as specifically tuned for DS emulation. Early review units revealed several problems with the device, however. Reviewers reported that the screens did not sync correctly, the chipset struggled with DS performance, and concerns about hinge durability grow louder by the day.

With the upcoming launch of the RG477V, Anbernic once again responds quickly to what the community asks for. If the company follows the groundwork it set with the RG477M, this handheld should avoid most of the problems that currently affect the RG DS.
