Ever since it was announced, the Anbernic RG DS has been a hot topic. It started off with excitement for the design and sub-$100 price point, but this started to disappear once the specs were shown, which are admittedly a little underwhelming. Still, it's an interesting device, and a new video was released showing off some of the features of the device and what you can do with the dual screen.
The new video starts out by showing some of the more generic features that could be done on devices with only one screen. This includes pixel scaling and overlay, as well as an NDS emulation shader filter, which is nice but not particularly special to the RG DS. However, the video picks up after the first 40 seconds.
Right after that, we see some of the benefits of having two screens. This includes:
- Playing two different games at the same time
- Gaming on the top screen while watching a video on the bottom
- Using the bottom screen for gaming and the top for guides
- Being able to change the wallpaper of each screen independently
- Dual-screen comic reading, which is just reading a comic on the bottom screen and the top screen zooms in
- Reading an E-book at the top while playing music on the music player on the bottom screen
- And being able to choose how you input text into fields, whether you are typing on the top or bottom screen.
None of these are really that special, and can generally be done on another dual-screen handheld like the AYN Thor (which we reviewed and loved). But there were a few interesting elements that popped up to me.
There are two features that were shown off that made me quite excited to see: Gyroscope and the Built-in Microphone. The gyroscope means we can use motion controls in emulated games, which is a really nice touch, while the microphone means we can use it in applicable games. I love this, especially the microphone, and I can see myself using it in games like WarioWare or Nintendogs.

I also noticed that it appears we will have to manually swap screens to keep playing, whether it be with our finger touching the screen we want to control or using the dedicated button. After using the AYN Thor's feature to lock controls to a screen, no matter what is done to the other screen, this feels like a little bit of a chore. I also am not sure in what scenario playing two games at once would be appealing, but I am sure someone will appreciate it more.
I really do like the look of the RG DS, but the chipset used worries me a little. It is pretty underpowered, and the price tag is a little high for what we are getting. Still, I am curious to see it in action for myself, so I will keep as open a mind as I can.
The Anbernic RG DS is $93.99 for pre-order, with shipments starting to ship out by December 15th.
